We welcomed David Lapin, author of Lead By Greatness, and O.C. Tanner’s own Kevin Ames to lead this month’s webinar. The two joined together to share insights into how organizations like yours can truly transform their corporate velocity.
Corporate velocity (the time it takes to get things done in an organization) has slowed by 22-50% in the last five years. But that doesn’t mean the corporate world is slowing down – the pulse of business and the speed of disruption (new technologies, businesses, and even industries) is accelerating.
As urgent as transformation is, less than 30% of organizational transformation initiatives actually succeed! So how can organizations truly transform themselves beyond merely just a change to their products, processes, technology, or structure?
One word: distinction. Organizations must begin by functioning in a way that is so uniquely different from anything else, that it becomes part of their nature and part of who they are as a culture. It becomes their purpose. This is not about learning new skills, changing a process or a structure, it’s about changing the core of how people function in your organization.
David provided 5 key questions for HR leaders to start this conversation:
- Has my company articulated the higher and unique purpose of its existence?
- Is our culture aligned to this unique difference we make?
- Is our leadership aligned with it?
- Do we have the talent we need to deliver on our purpose?
- Are we able to unlock our talent’s potential?
Kevin then took a deeper dive into the connection between this sense of distinction and recognition. The culture of an organization ultimately determines its success because, as David said, we want people to join around a common purpose. That culture will either inhibit or enable common goals and whether or not they are reached.
He asked listeners: what influences your people? A strong recognition strategy where peers and leaders are applying effort, achieving results, and celebrating milestones will help connect your people to a purpose.
