Leadership is the bedrock of building a great workplace culture, but often new leaders get stuck just doing their own jobs really well instead of inspiring great work from their people. This month’s webinar led by Gary Beckstrand, Vice President of the O.C. Tanner Institute, tackles this topic and how you can move your leaders from simply doing great work to influencing it on their teams.

Gary kicked things off by sharing the role that leaders play when it comes to attracting and keeping talent. Our research has found six key areas (we call them “Talent Magnets”) that are most important to employees when deciding on joining, engaging with, and staying at an organization. They are Purpose, Opportunity, Success, Appreciation, Wellbeing, and the topic covered today, Leadership. However, as our researchers looked into these results, they identified that Leadership is the magnet with the most effective path to all the others and to greater business results.

There are many things that leaders can do to inspire greatness and impact the talent magnets. After surveying over 1,000 employees around the world, the O.C. Tanner Institute found the number one thing that influences employees to do great work is to be recognized.

Too often leaders assume employees know the difference they’ve made without any verbal communication. But recognition best practices show that meaningful and purposeful recognition is the strongest way to produce great work and influence greatness in employees.   Gary led us through the three components connected to great work:

  • Encourage effort: Creates stronger trust and relationships, improves confidence in their skills, and helps them stay on track.

  • Reward results: Drives innovation and improvement, and helps them exceed customer expectations.

  • Celebrate careers: Shows the company cares about them as an individual, their contributions are valued, and that they belong.

People come to work wanting to make a difference and wanting to create meaningful results. What you believe about people significantly expands your influence as a leader. What kind of leader are you going to be?
